Patriarchal lineage amongst South African royalty often dictates that an heir to the throne has to be a man. But in the last ten years, this has begun to change with many women assuming the throne through cases that were taken all the way to the constitutional court when traditional arbiters failed to litigate legitimately. But while the official line pushes forward, the country’s staunch patriarchal heritage means that many tribes resent having women in positions of power.
