Too often, women in leadership positions find themselves without the support of their team. In order to manage successfully, even great women leaders need to know how to step into leadership roles and assert their power.
I know from experience that women in leadership positions face different challenges than do men in those same positions. When I was made Senior Director of Global Entertainment at a Bill Gates company, I was initially celebrated by the people around me. However, I soon found myself alone in the office. My team always seemed to find ways to abandon me.
This kind of treatment doesn’t contribute to a productive work environment and can only make the job of a leader more difficult.
Women leaders fall into a category that has yet to be fully defined. What does it mean to be a female leader? How does it differ from being a male leader? And what makes great women leaders truly great?
In order for women in leadership positions to really thrive, they should understand how to find the support they need, and how to give support to other women who need it. They should learn how to find a mentor, how to become a mentor, and how to find the support system that will allow them to use their power effectively.
An important part of finding support is learning how to communicate effectively with those who don’t want to accept your role as leader. Thus, it is vital for great women leaders to learn how to deal with reluctant team members in a way that will build trust and cooperation. These skills will help you to step into any leadership role and succeed.
