She will talk about her experience about women’s education in terms of the natural science, how can this be related to the leadership and how the next generation can do to improve it. Haiyan Gao is the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs at the Duke Kunshan University. She is also the Henry Newson professor of physics at the Duke University. She was the chair of the department of physics at Duke University from 2011 to 2014, and former President of the International Organization of the Chinese Physicists and Astronomers.
She was born in Shanghai, and spent a few years of her childhood in the city of kunshan. She received her B.S. degree from Tsinghua University in 1988 and Ph.D. in physics from Caltech in 1994. She was a Postdoctoral Research Associate at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign from 1994 to 1996 and then joined the staff at the Argonne National Laboratory in 1996. She became an assistant professor of physics at MIT in 1997 and was promoted to associate professor in 2002. She joined the physics faculty at Duke University in 2002 and became a full professor in 2008. She was named the Henry Newson Professor of Physics in 2012 at Duke.
