A presentation from the 2017 Women’s Leadership Conference, sponsored by Mediation Services of Eastern Iowa.
Speaker: Bria Marcelo, Director of Diversity Resources at the University of Iowa.
In a time where bias is going unchecked, we need to understand how our unconscious mind guides our attitudes, behavior, and choices. While reviewing current research and exploring the potential impact of bias in your home and the workplace, we must also address our contribution to a system that perpetuates inequities and confirm our role in dismantling it.
Marcelo completed her MA in Student Affairs Administration at Michigan State University and her BA in Sociology with a minor in Social and Economic Justice at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Within her higher education career, she has worked to address issues of exclusion, inequality, and conflict. She is a certified facilitator in Cultural Intelligence, Restorative Justice, and the National Coalition Building Institute. At the University of Iowa, Marcelo currently serves at the Director of the Diversity Resource unit, which helps to shift and maintain a University of Iowa campus culture that welcomes diversity and increases dialogue across difference.
